Maira Kalman: 37 Paintings

Maira Kalman, whose portfolio includes illustrations for multiple books – including Michael Pollan's updated Food Rules – and numerous covers for The New Yorker, presents 37 paintings, primarily taken from her book and magazine work from the last two years. The exhibit also features an embroidery that will be worked on during the show.

BMW Guggenheim Lab

After a stint in New York, this nomadic, and albeit controversial, theatre touches down in Berlin. Designed by Atelier Bow-Wow, the think-tank and public forum is equipped with chairs for lectures and screenings, and tables for workshops – all of which are raised into the ceiling when not in use. The programming focusses on developing strategies to make urban areas more livable.

Barrique: The Third Life of Wood
Submission Deadline: May 1, 2013
Barriques – the specialty barrels used to age vintages – deserve a second life. Submissions are requested in two groups, for those entrants under age 26 and those over, for an original design that reuses the wood from these barrels to address the conventional table. Three winning designs in each category will be produced, with the designers recieving royalties on sales.

Architect Maya Lin's 25-year career includes the completion of large-scale site-specific installation works that balanace fine art, architecture, and landscape – including the renowned Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. In a lecture, she addresses the environmentalism at the core of much of her work, including What Is Missing?, a multi-site work exploring habitat loss and extinction

Cappellini has helped launch the careers of internationally renowned and award-winning designers including Jasper Morrison, Nendo and Marc Newson. Inform Interiors and AZURE would also like to hear what your design question is for Giulio Cappellini and ask that you post your question to Inform’s Facebook page by May 22. One winner will be chosen to have their question read by Nelda Rodger and answered by Giulio Cappellini. This is an invitation-only event.

Now entering its 10th year, Come Up To My Room is Toronto's largest alternative design event, and a highlight of Toronto design week each January. Immersive, site-specific installations in any conceivable medium transform the historic Gladstone Hotel, with special focus on emerging artists and experimentation.
