OVERVIEW
To fully grasp the high regard the design world has for Design Academy Eindhoven, consider the pride of place the school’s graduate exhibition holds at such events as Dutch Design Week and Milan’s Fuorisalone. It’s at these extravaganzas that the school has launched the careers of such trail-blazing alumni as Maarten Baas, Piet Hein Eek, Sabine Marcelis and many other luminaries; and in October 2022, some 200 bachelor and master’s projects literally took The Stage to show their responses to “a world that’s threatened by environmental crises, accelerated by digitisation, and rewritten through new understandings of history” employing mediums like theatre, film and Extended Reality (XR).
Chia Dienn’s EPICLY supermassive gigonormous humongous fricking colossal capacious monstrous curvacious maHOOsive and whoppingly stupendous + almighty OMG WTF that thing is SOOOOOOOO BIG was also part of Design Academy Eindhoven’s graduation show 2022.
In its Bachelor and Master’s programs, Eindhoven takes a classically Dutch approach to learning, espousing freedom as the path to creativity and allowing students to become increasingly independent as their studies continue. Welcoming debate and difference, the institute seeks to produce critical and socially engaged designers. The 3DLab and the textile and silkscreen workshops are just a few of the opportunities that allow students to work with industrial-level machinery relevant to their area of interest. In a more direct way, Design Academy Eindhoven exposes students to practical work through partnerships with such institutions as TextielLab in Tilburg, Royal Mosa and Vlisco.
