The varied portfolio of American textile artist Sheila Hicks is in the spotlight at the Textile Museum of Canada. Her oeuvre, amassed throughout a 50-plus-year career ranges from teeny found object–collages incorporating feathers and shells to larger compositions that borrow from modern graphic design, favouring clean, geometric arrangements of blue, grey and white lines. Add to this the sculptural, metre-wide orbs in her Grand Boules series and recent riffs on traditional Moroccan and Guatemalan rug-making traditions, and it becomes clear: Hicks weaves a rich tapestry.
