Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival is committed to the cultivation of local talent by providing opportunities for early career designers to refine and strengthen their craft. Through our Assistant Design Program, successful applicants will work with established theatre artists to broaden their skills and obtain professional experience on a larger scale.

There are two ALD positions available, one will work with the BMO Mainstage Lighting Designer (LD) and one will work with the Howard Family Stage LD. Each ALD will assist the LD in the execution and maintenance of their design. The ALD position term is from March 1st to September 26th, 2020. The ALD will have varying time commitments. The expectation of weekly hours will fluctuate from occasional meetings early in the process, to an average of 30-40 hours per week during the build, load in and tech period. After the opening of the season, the ALD will attend one performance per week to maintain the aesthetic of the design.

Responsibilities

  • Reporting to the Technical Director, the ALD assists the LD and Head Electrician in the creation of lighting and special effects for the assigned Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival stage.
  • Attend run throughs of plays as required.
  • Check over all preliminary and final Lighting Plot paperwork and drawings.
  • Communicate any inconsistencies or changes to the final approved plot and inform the production and site teams prior to the lighting hang
  • Assist in the preparation of floor plans, cue sheets, tracking sheets and other forms for the documentation of the lighting design.
  • Aid in the supervision of the actual hanging and rigging of the lighting equipment.
    Be present during lighting hangs and keep paperwork updated as amendments are made to the plot.
  • Prepare and update the dimmer layouts, patch sheets and circuit lists as requested by LD’s.
  • Prepare an accurate sketch of all lamps as focused.
  • Takes notes of lighting looks where the LD and director may require special time with actors.
  • Return to observe each performance once every 2 weeks throughout the run to ensure integrity of the design and adjustment to the changing ambient light conditions in the tent.
  • Do focus touch-ups through summer with venue technician as required.

Qualifications

  • Working understanding of technical drawings required.
  • Knowledge of Word, Excel and AutoCAD/Vectorworks, Lightwright and SoftPlot are requested. It is not necessary that the assistant own these programs.
  • Working knowledge of lighting systems, grids, rigging and control consoles is required.
  • Strong communication skills in person as well as through technology.
  • Well organized, reliable and detail oriented.
  • Ability to plan time accordingly to meet production team needs, is essential.
  • University or Technical College Degree/Certificate in Technical Theatre or Theatrical Design would be an asset
  • At least two years of demonstrated combined professional and amateur design experience.
  • A successful candidate must possess a strong work ethic, have an ability to self-direct and be well organized, reliable and detail oriented.
  • A professional and friendly demeanor and a capacity for positive working relationships with colleagues is necessary as a member of a large and diverse organization.
  • A demonstrated desire to pursue a career in professional theatrical design.
