Perkins and Will provides expertise spanning various market sectors including transportation, mixed-use, commercial and civic development along with institutional experience in higher education, K-12 and corporate interiors. Disciplines range from large-scale urban planning, to architecture, interiors and industrial design.

The Toronto studio seeks an intern architect with a 1-2 years’ professional experience. This talented and enthusiastic individual will work with our talented team and thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. The incumbent will be a positive, dynamic and proactive individual who possesses strong technical, project management, interpersonal and communications skills, is highly creative, and skilled at managing competing priorities.

The Job Roles and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Essential Job Functions

  • Produce Architectural documentation for all phases of project work
  • Perform area calculations according to specified standards
  • Perform site analysis, including survey of existing conditions and field measurements
  • Working knowledge of building codes and other regulatory requirements
  • Working knowledge of coordination with specifications
  • Understand fundamentals of basic engineering systems
  • Develop detail sketches generated by project leaders
  • Research manufacturers’ materials and systems

Design & Research Skills

  • Adheres to firm and project goals of excellence in design, execution, and sustainability.
  • Understand and use planning, programming and design principles
  • Design in accordance with applicable codes and ordinances
  • Performs material research for preparation of project specifications
  • Collaborate with research staff on implementation of new technologies into project designs
  • Design within project schedules and budgets
  • Coordinate the selection of materials, colors and finishes
  • Review shop drawings, material samples and Construction Documents for conformance with design concepts
  • Understand and use appropriate graphic and modeling techniques to communicate solutions
  • Visualize and communicate in 3 dimensions
  • Understand and manipulate basic design elements such as proportion, color, light, texture & scale

Management & Professional Skills

  • Organize and estimate own time to execute task with the help from your supervisor
  • Coordinate consultants
  • Check own work for errors, omissions and legibility
  • Participation in Continuing Education Programs
  • Respond to demand of peak periods without loss of quality, thoroughness and accuracy
  • Adjust to changes in assignments, conditions, techniques and priorities
  • Take directions and function as a cooperative member of a project team
  • Accept constructive criticism as a means for improvement
  • Accept responsibility and seek out additional responsibility when appropriate
  • Meet company standards for attendance and punctuality
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Architecture
  • LEED GA or within 6 months of hire.
  • Transit and/or mixed-use experience is an asset
  • Some knowledge of sustainable building design and concepts
  • Some knowledge of architectural design documentation, detailing, building materials and codes, construction techniques, as well as building material compatibility and characteristics.
  • Practical knowledge of general architecture practice including programming, site planning and structural concepts and experience with complex renovation projects.
  • Knowledge of industry standards, current product development, and architectural practices.
  • Some experience with contract language and liability.
  • Collaborative and professional work ethic.
