Nicolas le Moigne

February 8 to March 8, 2012

Swiss designer Nicolas le Moigne has already made a large impact in his short career, with lighting products and furniture for Eternit and Pfister that merge contrasting qualities. Fragility and robustness, industry and artistry and sophistication and simplicity are but a few combinations evident in his work. In his first solo show in the U.K., le Moigne shows a survey of his work including limited edition designs for NextLevel Galerie in Paris and Helmrinderknecht in Berlin and debuts the leather Slip stool.

Alberta Association of Architects: Banff Session 2012

April 27 and 28, 2012

Five speakers, including Craig Dykers of Snøhetta and Kim Nielsen of 3XN, explore how cultural differences impact and enhance design decisions and working methods while connecting people to places. How does an architect from Western Europe design a school that the locals adopt as their own for a community in Bangladesh? How does an interior designer create work environments for a corporation to embrace, and even enhance, a corporate culture they are not a part of? In an industry becoming increasingly more globalized, architects and interior designers are working in countries, and among cultures, that are very different from their own. Many times, these projects - museums, memorials, libraries, art galleries and corporate headquarters - hold a special significance in the community. These institutions represent the collective character of a group and how that image is presented to the rest of the world.

Pruitt Igoe Now

Submission Deadline: March 16, 2012

The Pruitt and Igoe housing projects in St. Louis, MO, can represent many different things: the naïveté of 1950s modernist civic design, the urban decay of the 1960s, and the legacy of poor planning into the next century. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the demolition of these ill-fated highrises, and non-profit Pruitt Igoe Now invites academics, architects, students, landscape architects, urban planners, writers, historians and artists to reimagine the relationship between the site of the former projects and the rest of the city. Winning submissions will inspire new ideas for the site, with the top three nabbing cash prizes. Winners and runners-up will be exhibited at a symposium in April 2012, hosted by Portland State University.
