Over the last two days, Blu Dot plotted 25 Real Good Chairs on the streets of New York – free for the taking.
The deliberate product placement is for the Real Good Chair Experiment, a riff on the popular New York “curb-mining” pastime. The company dropped chairs by the side of the road in SoHo, Brooklyn, Union Square, Harlem, West Village, Greenwich, and Chinatown. Most of the chairs were scooped up within seconds, while others took a few hours. At Confucius Square, a gentleman rested on one for 20 minutes and left empty-handed. Most of the RGCs are GPS-enabled, tracking their journeys around the city. Once they’ve reached their new homes, the company will follow up with the new owners and release a documentary in December to highlight the first anniversary of the Soho showroom.
