OVERVIEW

The Faculty of Architecture at the University of Hong Kong has been instrumental in charting China’s rapid transformation – Rural Urban Framework, notable for its seminal research and architectural interventions throughout the Republic, is based in the school. Yet the faculty’s focus goes far beyond its geographical setting, which of course includes cosmopolitan Hong Kong, or “the greatest experiment in city building that human civilization ever embarked upon.” Through its five HKUrbanLabs, the school’s multi-pronged research arm, which includes an urban big data lab, an architectural conservation lab and a fabrication lab, it delves into every major aspect of design and construction as well as critical niche areas, from artificial intelligence to property rights.

Enrolees of the Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies participate in hands-on design studio workshops, where they are immersed in the study of “ecosystems and infrastructure, robotics and artificial intelligence, energy and the environment, and emerging rural and urban conditions.” The two-year Master of Architecture, meanwhile, available to those who hold Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies degree or equivalent, encourages students to explore the “boundaries of disciplinary knowledge with methodological rigour while engaging critically with the constraints of contemporary practice.”

While the school views Hong Kong and the populous Pearl River Delta as one of the most inspiring living labs in the world today, the University of Hong Kong also offers international exchanges through partnerships with top schools in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia to address building and global citizenship challenges in very different environments. All classes are taught in English.
