Can technology feel natural? While innovations in digital fabrication are rapidly expanding the aesthetic possibilities for designers and manufacturers, many of the best commercial interiors are defined by a soothing, natural colour palette. The drive to create human-centric spaces is at the heart of Formica Group’s new SurfaceSet 2020 collection, which pairs cutting-edge engineering with a design philosophy that emphasizes connection to nature.

Featuring an impressive range of new woodgrains, solids and patterned Formica laminates (a selection of finishes is shown above), SurfaceSet 2020 gives interior designers a diverse portfolio to create beautiful and functional commercial and contract spaces. The collection is grouped into three broad palettes — No Boundaries, Engineered Design and Fluidity — each of which encompasses a multitude of design solutions.

Part of the no Boundaries collection, Layered Black Sand offers a distinctly textured aesthetic.

A celebration of natural materials, No Boundaries is made up of saturated organic tones that foster a sense of familiarity while retaining a contemporary look. Utilizing innovative small-batch production, the Natural Recycled Kraft series is a No Boundaries highlight: Made with 100 per cent recycled materials, the matte laminate is a faithful take on kraft paper, conveying a distinct texture. Every sheet is unique.

Engineered Design combines technical precision with a surprisingly comforting tactility. Available in five colourways, the Felt series is a hard-surface solution with a soft, organic presence enhanced by a feeling of warmth. The fabric-inspired optical solid is a perfect fit for modern office and hospitality spaces.

Blue Felt is an understated standout in the Engineered Design series.

The Fluidity palette unfolds in ethereal tones and iridescent effects. Sleek and streamlined, its aluminum, stainless-steel and glass surfaces are humanized by a sensory approach to digital design; every colour has its own personality. The palette’s softwood surfaces — inspired by the linden tree — offer a barely there tinted woodgrain in a timelessly minimal look.

According to Renee Hytry Derrington, global design lead for Formica Group, SurfaceSet 2020 “blurs the overlap between natural, human and technological dimensions.” The result is a thoughtful collection of design solutions that, as Hytry Derrington puts it, “carries the warmth of the natural world.”
