Venice is the most fitting place to host an exhibit on the enduring appeal of craft. If you live for hand-made, artisanal-modern design, make your way to the Fondazione Giorgio Cini on San Giorgio Maggiore Island. Among its many features is a selection of works presented by the Fondation Bettencourt, which includes Japon, série L’âge du monde, an urn created by Claude Aïello and Mathieu Lehanneur that visually maps the population age of Japan (it’s part of a global series) to the Nature morte vessels by ceramicist Kristin McKirdy. There’s also Doppia Firma, or Double Signature, with designers collaborating with Venetian artisans: For instance, Dutch designer Kiki van Eijk with gold leaf artisan Marino Menegazzo. In short, this is a gorgeous show in a timeless place.
