The Triennale di Milano hosts this exhibition that provides an overview of the reconstruction of cities and territories across time, from Europe to the Middle East and the Americas, in the aftermath of catastrophe. Epoch-making events, though rare, have made urban reconstruction a constant practice, due to the intensification of wars, earthquakes and other types of catastrophe. Yet this vast experience has not led to the formation of a real heritage that can be used as a model. A selection of the most significant cases in Italy and from around the world are given as possible models, illustrated by historical documents, news photos, works by great photographers, and excerpts from films and documentaries, as well as architectural designs and urban plans. The exhibition ends with considerations about the most recent cases, still fixed in the moment of the emergency as in a state of suspended animation, opening up new questions about the role of architects and architecture in reconstruction.
