Stirling Stories 2018 – North

The York Architecture Association (YAA) and the Leeds Society of Architects (LSA) has the great pleasure to host this prestigious event in York which will bring together the RIBA Stirling Prize shortlist before the awards evening in London.

The event will take place at the stunning newly refurbished Art Deco cinema, the Everyman in York on 27 September 2018 from 6.30pm and we are delighted that Harry Gration MBE, presenter of BBC Look North for the Yorkshire region will be our host for the evening.

In addition to this, we are delighted that the event will also feature a keynote speech from the award-winning Diébédo Francis Kéré of Kéré Architecture from Gando, Burkina Faso and now based in Berlin. He has worked in Burkina Faso, Mali, Germany and Switzerland and has been recognized nationally and internationally with awards including the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2004 for his first building, a primary school in his home town of Gando and was chosen in 2017 to design the Serpentine Pavilion.

Kéré has held professorships at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the Swiss Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio and last year accepted the professorship for “Architectural Design and Participation” at TU München in Germany. The work of the pratice has been shown in exhibitions at the Architecture Museum in Munich, Philadelphia Museum of Art and in group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and at ‘Sensing Spaces’ at the Royal Academy, London in 2014.

The Stirling Prize 2018 shortlisted architects will reveal the stories behind the nominated buildings and what inspired their creations, the shortlisted projects are:

  2. Bushey Cemetery, Hertfordshire by Waugh Thistleton Architects
  3. Chadwick Hall, University of Roehampton by Henley Halebrown
  4. New Tate St Ives, Cornwall by Jamie Fobert Architects with Evans & Shalev
  5. Storey’s Field Centre and Eddington Nursery, Cambridge by MUMA
  6. The Sultan Nazrin Shah Centre, Worcester College, Oxford by Niall McLaughlin Architects
