Situated in ArkDes in Stockholm, Torget is a hub for discussions about societal transformations and the challenges they present. It’s also the place to experience the Power of Places research project, which explores methods for preserving the local in Malmö’s urban development processes. Through this project, a group of architects and artists under the collective moniker Layered – Daniel Feldman, Ana Sokoloff, Sumayya Vally, and María José Arjona – examines how the city’s Nyhamnen district could be developed by making the most out of what already exists.
Layered has studied and mapped everything – from buildings and materials to local people’s experiences of the place, and their dreams about its future. Based on this, it has proposed numerous interventions: a car ramp facing demolition will become an amphitheatre, dismantled fencing will be transformed into woven pergolas, and the wild greenery of the area will become a forest directly on the asphalt. Together with the craft group MalmöVÄV↗, Layered has woven together an installation based on what is already there.
