The Department of Art, Art History and Design at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in industrial design (ID) at the rank of assistant professor. The department seeks an outstanding designer who can balance theory and practice with a proven record of extensive knowledge in one or more of the following areas: user experience(UX) design, digital modeling & visualization, design entrepreneurship and/or interdisciplinary collaboration. Qualified applicants are asked to present a record of accomplishment in design practice and a trajectory of research/ design activities required of a research and teaching university.The appointed faculty member will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to industrial design in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment. The faculty member will be expected to participate in curriculum development, engage in academic and professional service, and work collaboratively with internal and external research partners and organizations. The terminal degree (MFA, MS, MID) in design is required for this position. Candidates with relevant teaching experience while serving the professional industry are encouraged to apply. Industrial Design at the University of Notre Dame is established around human-centered principles. The program focuses on building a deep empathy with the stakeholders and solving wicked problems with contextual solutions that derive from a holistic vision. Common research/course topics include social innovations, health care, product automation, and cultural divergence. The design program (ID and Visual Communication Design) is part of a dynamic, multi-disciplinary creative studies department that includes studio artists and art historians all committed to a collaborative teaching and learning environment within the context of a liberal arts education.
