Ryerson School of Interior Design, Assistant Professor
The School of Interior Design (RSID) in the Faculty of Communication and Design (FCAD) at Ryerson University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position, at the Assistant Professor level, beginning July 1, 2018, subject to final budgetary approval. Emphasis is on teaching innovative design studios.
RSID offers a rigorous program with a progressive pedagogical agenda that strikes a balance between the theoretical and practical. As the leading Interior Design program in Canada, the School is located in the vibrant center of Toronto and builds upon the active design community and progressive academic research initiatives within the University.
RSID is housed in a renovated warehouse with a Digital Fabrication Lab, Workshop facilities, Design Resource Centre and open studios. Emphasis is placed on innovative fabrication through analog and digital processes, where hands-on learning is in tandem with novel practices. Accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), RSID has graduated many of the prominent designers practicing today.
The successful candidate will have a rigorous research program that bridges interiors with designed objects, material culture, and allied creative careers. Emphasis is placed on making, structured process, and research to complement the program’s commitment to innovation and design. Candidates should have a strong teaching record at the university level and are expected to pursue funded research activities. Creative practice and scholarly works are to be demonstrated through publications, awards, exhibitions, grants, and/or other peer-reviewed activities. A terminal degree, at minimum, is required with special consideration for those holding a D.Des/Ph.D.
RSID will offer graduate programs in the future, and the successful candidate will take an active role in graduate and undergraduate curriculum development. The successful candidate will actively participate in collegial service and will expand research and collaborations within the School and FCAD.

- A curriculum vitae
- A letter of application with a statement of teaching and design/research interests (three page maximum).
- A portfolio of work that shows both academic/creative scholarship and student work.
