The Campus Architect is the aesthetic steward advising on architectural integrity, quality standards, built environment code compliance for the J. Paul Trust and Getty Programs (Getty Museum, Getty Research Institute, Getty Conservation and Getty Foundation).  The Campus Architect acts as senior project manager for special initiatives, Capital and Renewal projects. The Campus Architect manages architectural work and oversees project teams dealing specifically with accessibility, space, signage and furnishing, fixtures and related equipment. The Getty Campus Architect is a senior member of the Facilities team at the Trust and reports to the Head of Capital Projects.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Acts as the aesthetic conscience of the Getty
  • Works closely with the Head of Capital Projects, Director of Facilities and Operations and Getty Programs to plan, direct and execute projects. Coordinate and oversee all scales of capital and renewal projects including planning, design and construction activities for Capital, tenant improvement projects and signage related to Getty owned or leased facilities.
  • Support the Getty Programs on special initiatives such as exhibition programming, planning and execution.
  • Works closely with client groups to develop strong collaborative project teams.
  • Responsible for projects to be consistent with the standards of design excellence established at each of our facilities.
  • Ensures the integration of sustainable design and construction principals in projects.
  • Ensures integration of accessible design principals in projects.
  • Advises, develops, implements and manages policies, procedures, goals, objectives and priorities.
  • Participates in the selection, training, supervision and evaluation of the work of other staff.
  • Assists in the assignment of work activities and projects and monitors progress.
  • Assists in the development of project scope priorities and budget estimates.
  • Develops, prepares, maintains and monitors scope, schedules, budgets and construction management procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable codes, laws, policy and accessibility and safety standards.
  • Reviews and evaluates designs, proposals, budget estimates and bid documents for projects.
  • Oversees and monitors the performance of contractors and consultants to ensure the quality of work and timeliness of delivery is within budget and in accordance with the terms of the agreement.
  • Performs complex analysis, and research.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, planning, or closely related field and minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in the area of program management related to project planning, building design, construction and code compliance.
  • Master of Architecture degree preferred.
  • California Licensed Architect required.
  • California Driver’s License, Class C or the ability to obtain a valid CDL Class C by the time of employment
  • Professional experience in a cultural, higher education setting and/or with campus environment
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of principles and practices of:

  • Planning and design, cost development, schedule, and budget management
  • Long-range planning, sustainable design, California environmental review process (CEQA)
  • Accessibility, land use, housing, transportation, circulation and infrastructure planning
  • Site planning, and design review

Demonstrated experience:

  • With project supervision, particularly in the area of directing architectural, engineering and specialty consultants.
  • Conducting successful public involvement processes, including addressing contentious issues, consensus building, and preparing/giving presentations
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with a wide variety of constituents both on the Getty campus, and within the community
  • Conducting research, analysis and development of plans and technical reports and presentations
  • Reviewing, analyzing, and interpreting technical, environmental, economic, and legal information
  • Preparing material for RFQs/RFPs and managing consultant contracts

  • Ability to organize, coordinate, and complete work in demanding situations and to prioritize work to meet the demands of multiple deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member, as appropriate to the situation
  • Ability to explain and follow established procedures
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project; Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Photoshop, AutoCAD
