Mississauga is a successful and dynamic world class city. We are in an exciting period of growth and urban development with inspirational possibilities and potential. The city has grown from a collection of villages to Ontario’s third largest city, and the sixth largest in Canada with a population of over 750,000. Mississauga is now entering a new stage in its evolution – one of intensification and urbanization. Situated on the north shore of Lake Ontario, and at the centre of the Golden Horseshoe, Mississauga is an economic powerhouse. With the country’s largest airport on the northeastern corner of the City, access to major rail corridors, and the three busiest highways in the county, Mississauga is central and well-connected. Leading the implementation of the City’s Official Plan, the Commissioner of Planning & Building shapes Mississauga as it continues to be “a place where people choose to be.”
Under the direction of the City Manager and CAO, the Commissioner leads all divisions of the Planning and Building Department and will champion corporate projects that support the City’s strategic planning priorities. While focusing on timely and effective customer service, you will use your experiences, insights, and practiced leadership to build relationships and define future vision, plans, goals and objectives of the Department. As an executive level contributor, you will provide innovative, strategic and professional development advice, recommend and lead priorities for the City, and facilitate future development strategy. Partnering with community stakeholders and internal partners, you will liaise with all levels of government, municipal agencies, industry specific sectors, and the public to represent the City, build business relationships, and promote the City’s vision.
An experienced city builder, the ideal candidate is a Registered Professional Planner in Canada or internationally. With more than 15 years in executive-level leadership roles, you are comfortable and effective in engaging a public audience; you understand diplomacy and the importance of working closely with Mayor and Council. Known as being approachable, hands-on, and an active contributor, you embrace team building and are passionate about place making and urban development. You’ve helped shaped growing cities and embrace affordable housing, accessible transit, and walkability. Here is your opportunity to build out the next chapter of Mississauga’s development.
