Design Museum Boston is seeking a Community Manager responsible for managing the museum’s presence in Boston, planning/executing impactful programming, building strong relationships, and growing our impact. A successful candidate will be multi-talented, entrepreneurial, and a leader with the ability to influence and motivate others towards achieving the museum’s vision and mission. 

The position is equal parts management and action — the Community Manager will work with programmatic staff to maintain and manage our portfolio of Boston programming, while also planning, leading, and executing key initiatives across operations including relationship building, content, educational programming, and marketing. The position is full-time and reports to the Vice President of the museum.

The Community Manager will:

  • Own the vision of Design Museum Boston’s programming and make sure we execute high quality experiences for our audience, donors, and partners.
  • Be the face of Design Museum Boston’s programming:
        • Grow the Design Museum community in Boston
        • Public speaking at events
        • Build participation and partners
        • Understand our community and how the audience engages with the Museum
        • Always be identifying new topics and themes the community is interested in learning more about
  • Manage program and marketing staff by mentoring and creating trust:
    • Build autonomy among team but provide for strong accountability
    • Allow for happy, productive staff with capacity to be creative
    • Fill gaps within the team as necessary to ensure consistent programming
  • Be an organized project manager for maintaining and executing Design Museum Boston’s high-quality portfolio of programming.
  • Reviewing and holding team accountable to budgets and schedules for:
    • Exhibitions, events, publications, education programs
    • Marketing
    • Manage, lead, and coach staff, volunteers, and event speakers to create seasonal calendars of programming.
  • Serve as the initial editor and approver of program staff’s work before seeking Executive level approval:
      • Provide constructive criticism and creatively solve problems
  • Establish and maintain strong communication with the museum’s community in Boston: staff, board members, advisory council members, volunteers, interns, and other contributors.


Qualified applications will have/be:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.
  • 3-5 years of relevant professional experience, with program and team management experience.
  • The ability to assess priorities, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and work well under pressure.
  • Entrepreneurial, energetic, self-motivated, and a leader!
  • A strong work ethic and attention to detail.
  • A creative problem solver with a passion for design and education.
  • A self-starter who can receive direction but also contribute under uncertainty.
  • Extremely organized and cool under pressure.
  • An efficient worker producing quality work on both short and long term projects.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, able to speak publicly, and negotiate. This role requires an extroverted public speaker to speak at events, facilitate phone calls, etc.
  • Observant, friendly, kind, respectful, supportive of others.
  • Able to absorb and adapt work based on feedback from management.
  • Goal oriented, but not afraid to admit when they need help.


Technical Skills Required:

  • Adobe suite: photo editing, simple layouts via Illustrator/Indesign
  • Apple Keynote and Microsoft Powerpoint
  • Experience design/presentation, attendee experience from start to finish
  • Mailchimp, Eventbrite, Googledocs, Slack, WordPress
  • Experience with CRMs and working with data
  • Copywriting/editing


Position requires:

  • Full-time commitment, which includes morning and evening events.
  • Ability to work alone or as part of a team, sometimes under high stress.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and lift at least 50lbs.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
