SOM is currently seeking a Senior Associate Principal to join their San Francisco office.

Position Overview

Co-lead the San Francisco Interiors Studio with the Design and Technical Studio leaders.  Goals for the leadership group include strengthening and growing the interiors practice through, fostering an environment that supports design excellence, exceptional management of projects and the studio, business development, process improvements, talent development and effective collaboration with other disciplines. 

Position Responsibilities 

Studio Leadership

  • Co-leads the Interiors studio through close collaboration with Partners and Principals and project leadership to achieve design, technical and financial success.
  • Thought leadership and developing strategy on how to build and inspire teams, and to enhance studio culture.
  • Leads others by example, participates in staff mentoring and training, clearly defines team member expectations and responsibilities, empowers others, and delegates where appropriate based on team members’ recognized abilities and potential.
  • Actively engages in internal and external professional development opportunities.
  • Contributes to the implementation of sustainable strategies in all project assignments and the associated development of staff knowledge.
  • Recruits, onboards, and mentors Project Managers to provide daily support on projects
  • Actively lead business development.

Studio Management

  • Responsible for monitoring the financials and performance of the studio.
  • Formulates strategic business plan for Interiors studio.
  • Manages both our existing project pipeline and driving new business and marketing efforts. 
  • Organizes project plans with input from Design and Technical Leads from Interiors Group. 
  • Contributes to the development of standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Participates actively in project design, technical discussions and decision making.
  • Reviews RFPs, qualifies the bid, assigns due dates and tasks to key collaborators, and provides response.
  • Actively engages in project risk management through close collaboration with SOM leaders and legal group. 

Project Management

  • Prepares, with Leadership input, quality agreements with clients including letters of intent, memoranda of understanding, and professional service agreements. Executes additional service agreements and gains authorization by phase.
  • Collaborates with Leadership team to prepare, issue, and manage compliance plans to align project goals including budget, deliverables and schedule. 
  • Recruits, mentors and trains new project architects and project managers for the Interiors Studio and oversees their performance 
  • Administers internal control procedures with Project Accountant including billing, collections, percent complete, expense management, and year-end activities. Analyzes project reports and proactively manages the profitability of a project.
  • Assists in Managing the owner/client relationship and expectations to allow SOM and team to work effectively, efficiently and collaboratively.
  • Initiates, monitors and maintains project schedule and work plan including schedule of meetings and presentations.
  • Communicates actively through chairing weekly meetings, issuing meeting minutes and accurate project record keeping and sharing project information and correspondence.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of five or six-year Interior or Architectural degree program; 
  • General understanding of sustainable strategies and principles including familiarity with LEED or other green building rating systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead project teams and manage project schedule, budget and program.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Understands and is conversant in Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino, parametric and rendering software, and other graphic software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office/Project, Google Suite, Adobe Suite.
  • Familiarity with Deltek Vision, Salesforce.
  • LEED accreditation preferred.

Portfolios must be submitted for all design positions (Architecture, Interiors, Planning, etc). Portfolios should be one PDF attachment, 10-20 pages, maximum 5 MB.
