Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) is searching for a Junior Designer – City Design to join their Year One program in San Francisco. The Year One program picks up where formal education leaves off, with a suite of events and initiatives for young professionals to get the most out of their first year at SOM.

Position Responsibilities

  • Generation of planning and design ideas
  • Research and documentation of precedents and scale studies
  • Development of diagrams and rendered site plans
  • File management, planning and design processes, and quality control standards for deliverables
  • Basic understanding of planning and urban design concepts, building typologies and critical dimensions, utility and infrastructure systems, land development considerations and planning/zoning codes, and phasing and implementation techniques
  • Ability to enrich design concepts through knowledge, research, and application of technical and visualization skills
  • Strong conceptual design ability on projects of varying complexity and sites of divergent scales
  • Effective written, oral, and visual internal communication
  • Active collaboration at a project team level
  • Time and workload management
  • Energy, enthusiasm, creativity, and disciplined work ethic
  • Active participation in the Year One Program (as appropriate)

Qualifications & Skills

  • Recent completion of professional Degree in Architecture, Planning, Urban design, or Landscape Architecture.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in AutoCAD, Rhino, Grasshopper, Enscape, Lumion, parametric and rendering software
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office
  • LEED accreditation is preferred
  • Revit proficiency is a plus
  • Interest in large-scale planning, mixed-use and transit oriented development
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and intensely collaborative professional environment
  • Problem solving and decision-making qualities
  • High attention to detail
