Auburn University industrial design student

OVERVIEW

Auburn’s School of Industrial + Graphic Design is recognized for its studio-based and industry-sponsored projects, where students delve into transportation, furniture, consumer products, and exhibits. In the nine-semester bachelor program, students acquire skills in concept sketching, computer visualization, 3D CAD, prototype fabrication and photography. Meanwhile, the graduate program, ranked consistently as one of the top ten programs in the United States by DesignIntelligence, combines a thorough design orientation with an industry practicum placement, portfolio development course and an optional thesis. Throughout, students learn to design products and systems that are both easily manufactured and profitable, while centring human interaction and sustainability.

Auburn University provides a plethora of resources to make graduates’ integration into the world of design seamless. Case in point: the Design for Health studio, which allows students to “design the next generation of health care equipment through partnerships with biomedical engineers, pharmaceutical packaging companies, and prosthetic designers.” Other projects have seen students collaborating with technological leaders like NASA, the Alabama Wildlife Centre and Pratt Industries. This exposure to industry heavyweights and vital project experience is also open to prospective students: Auburn offers a week-long resident camp specifically for high school students to help them engage with the materials and techniques they hopefully will be learning in the coming years.
