OVERVIEW

Immersive and hands-on, the Industrial Design program (within the Faculty of Design & Dynamic Media) at Emily Carr University of Art + Design allows students to define their own practice along the way. Rigorous coursework and hands-on projects allow them to prototype products, design services, craft furniture and examine material practices. Emily Carr takes a studio-based approach to most learning practices, where students learn to address issues of sustainability and equity in local and international contexts.

Students also work on projects tied to their community: In 2019, students in the Wood Product Development course collaborated with BC Cancer on the design of supportive, more comfortable seating for cancer patients and their families in the organization’s facilities. The program provides access to key fabrication facilities, including a 3-D printing studio, a dedicated health-design lab, and a Wearables and Interactive Products Lab equipped with workstations and tools that allow students to develop prototypes and test interactive textiles.
