A top-ranked industrial design school, Umeå’s Institute of Design (part of the university’s Faculty of Science and Technology) offers a specialized master’s course in interaction design that presents a “product as event” approach to shaping interactions where the focus is on people’s needs rather than technological capability. Inspired by its locale, learning takes a user-centered Scandinavian design approach and affords project collaborations with external partners. Completed in the courses Faceless Interaction and Professional Product, “Traders of the Climate Data” and “Aero,” a smart interface for anaesthesia and intensive care that makes breathing visible in real time, are examples of Umeå student projects that have been recognized by international awards programs. With at least 30 nationalities represented in the student body, the school is noted for its unique creative energy and rich cross-cultural ambiance. All of the UID’s graduate classes are conducted in English.
