Strengths

Learning through an immersion in real-world challenges and their complex and multidisciplinary solutions

Overview

Despite launching just shy of 20 years ago, the University of Montreal’s Interior Design program, offered through the Faculty of Environmental Planning and Design, has quickly developed a solid research- and theory-based foundation. Courses (all delivered in French) includes academic bases (such as the history of interior design and architecture) as well as studio time, during which undergrads hone problem-solving abilities and pick up essential skills first-hand. A noteworthy recent project saw students developing housing ideas for Syrian refugee camps in Jordan, with the results exhibited at Montreal’s annual SIDIM interior design show. In 2017, faculty studios (and visiting professors) explored themes like “happiness and well-being in complex environments” and “the dynamics of interiors within urban and local cultural contexts.” Internships in the final year of study expose students to the complexities of the professional world.

Notable alumni

Jessica Rivière Gomez of Index-Design, Laurie Bedikian of Samare, Frédéric Morin of Inside Studio, Mylène Parent of MPADesign, Caroline Joly of Huma Design
