Designed by French studio Leclercq Viallet, the Canelé table lamp from Hay was named for the classic Bordeaux pastry that inspired its creation.
Directly referencing the delectable dessert’s fluted cylindrical shape, the Canelé table lamp features vertical channels made by an interplay of folded steel and pleated textile. When developing the lamp, Camille Viallet and Théo Leclercq — who founded their Paris-based studio in 2016 — began by pairing folded paper lampshades with structures made from flat metal components.
Originally conceived as gallery objects with those handcrafted paper shades, the Canelé table lamp was reimagined for industrial production by Hay to join its lighting collection; the brand and designers adapted the materials — the now-machine-pleated fabric component is backed by white polycarbonate — to lend the design a reliable robustness while staying true to the original character of its predecessor.
Now a glowing sculpture, the Canelé table lamp by Hay emits a soft light with a subtly coloured hue. Like the sweet treat itself, the lampshade’s pleated textile forms a soft “rouleaux” (or rolled) triangle shape, which contribute to its playful presence. Further, the pinching of the single-tone fabric creates a striped effect, adding depth, dimension and shadow play.
The folds of the table lamp’s shade slide easily onto the three-legged steel frame support, securing it in place without the visual interruption of clamps or brackets.
Making a statement on tables, shelves and windowsills, the Canelé table lamp from Hay is available in four cheerful colours: Tomato Red, Almond Green, Soft Blue and Warm White.
