OVERVIEW

Central Saint Martins is renowned as one of the best art and design schools in the world. It draws students from 90 countries to its campus in central London (CSM is part of the University of the Arts London) for 3D design and product design, a broad-ranging subject area. They can pursue three BAs, including Product and Industrial Design, where they learn to address the need for design in a “changing social, environmental and political environment;” and four MAs, which include an Industrial Design and a Material Futures track. In the latter, alumna Mireille Steinhage recently invented a solar-powered blanket made from conductive yarn. The school has also added an online MA in Regenerative Design, where students explore how to restore local biospheres.

Working consistently with external industry partners and their extensive network of alumni, the school exposes students to the profession, helping them to develop their skills with the brightest minds in design. In the UAL graduate showcase, Master’s students show off daring new work, including Emily Cornuaud’s kitchen tool set that allows for people to pair up on baking tasks with their loved ones experiencing dementia; and Kenzo Biswas’s new material made of fava beans.

The program has produced more Royal Designers for Industry in the subject than any other undergraduate course in the world; its world-revered lecturers have included Thomas Heatherwick and among its alumni are Bill Moggridge and Sam Hecht.
