Strengths: A focus on turning out students who are not only able to deliver top-notch design solutions, but are also open-minded global citizens comfortable in coming at large, multifaceted design situations from a critical stance

The overview: A top-ranked industrial design school, Umeå’s Institute of Design (part of the university’s Faculty of Science and Technology) offers a specialized masters course in interaction design that presents a “practical and concrete” approach to moulding interactions. Courses look at everything from conceptual ideas around how new technologies are affecting people’s behaviours and well-being to planning environments related to heavy machinery or high-tech medical equipment. Inspired by its locale, learning takes a user-centered Scandinavian design approach and affords project collaborations with external partners. With at least 30 nationalities represented in the student body, the school is noted for its unique creative energy and rich cross-cultural ambiance. The campus is also home to the schools of Architecture and Fine Arts, the Bildmuseet museum for contemporary art, the HumlabX digital humanities centre and the Sliperiet creative hub and makerspace. All of the UID’s graduate classes are conducted in English.
