HUD Innovation in Affordable Housing Student Design and Planning Competition 2022

The Innovation in Affordable Housing Student Design and Planning Competition is an exciting initiative from HUD’s Office of Policy Development and Research (PD&R). Now entering its ninth year, the competition invites teams of graduate students from multiple disciplines to submit plans in response to a real life affordable housing design issue. This competition is designed to encourage research and innovation in affordable housing, to raise practitioner and future practitioner capacity, and to foster cross-cutting team-work within the design and community development process.

After the submission of initial applications, a jury of five industry subject matter experts will select four student team finalists. These finalists will visit the site of the affordable housing design and planning project they are addressing, and further refine their applications.

Eligibility

Multidisciplinary teams must be comprised of a minimum of three students and a maximum of five, plus one faculty advisor. Each team must have members representing three different graduate level programs; one of which must be from an architectural or design-related program, and one of which must be from a non-architectural program.

  • All team members must be enrolled in a graduate degree program from an accredited educational institution in the United States.
  • All team leaders must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
  • All teams must be comprised of at least three citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

Prizes

The winning team will receive $20,000, the runner up team will receive $10,000, and the remaining two teams will receive $5,000 each
