With summer on the horizon, the call of the outdoors is stronger than ever. Whether embracing patio season and dining al fresco or lounging by the beach, the changing of the seasons provides a welcome opportunity to reconnect with nature. For leading outdoor furnishings manufacturer Dedon, it’s no wonder, then, that the natural world served as inspiration for its revamped seating range. Building on his iconic Seashell collection, Jean-Marie Massaud has designed the Seashell Grand lounge chair translating the organic design language of the previous iteration to a whole new scale. Defined by its elegantly curved backrest and seat, the chair creates a cushioned cocoon around the sitter, evoking the tranquility and protection of its namesake form. (A sister collection, Seashell Nuo, rounds out the series with dining chairs, barstools, a lounge chair and chaise).
Handcrafted by Dedon’s master weavers, Seashell Grand exemplifies the brand’s longstanding commitment to traditional craftsmanship. Founded in 1990, Dedon was a frontrunner in bringing woven outdoor furnishings to life utilizing high-performance, man-made fibres. Despite the company’s German roots, its partnership with Studio B has been instrumental in building awareness of the brand in Canada since 2004. Located in Toronto’s King East design district, the furniture dealer has become a trusted resource for interior designers working on high-end residential projects — and a champion of Dedon.

Today, Dedon continues to innovate, maintaining the reputation of quality and luxury for which it has become renowned. Case in point: The updated Seashell range debuts Dedon’s Eco-Cycle Fiber, boasting the same strength, durability and luxurious texture as the original Dedon Fiber, now derived 90 per cent from renewable plant-based resources. “At Dedon, we feel a responsibility towards nature and future generations,” says Chief R&D Officer Nicola Rapetti. “We know that our customers share this sense of responsibility. And with the Dedon EcoCycle Fiber, which is made from 90 per cent bio-based polyethylene, we can offer them an environmentally conscious alternative.”

Beyond its materiality, the collection embodies a deep respect for its environment, available in four new coastal-inspired colourways — oak, oasis, seaside and umber — that blend seamlessly into their natural surroundings. The two-tone designs feature contrasting hues, intricately woven together to add depth and unique character to each piece.

Ultimately, the most sustainable piece of furniture is not just one that is built to last, but one whose design also stands the test of time. “This evolution of Seashell also inspires an idea of continuity — the consistency of products we love for a long time,” says Massaud. Marrying exceptional comfort, unparalleled quality and a design that embraces the timeless beauty of nature, the Seashell Grand delivers.
