The core of sustainability is beauty. While emerging technologies and novel materials are continuing to push the envelope in low-carbon fabrication, even the most ecologically manufactured furniture means little without a timeless aesthetic. After all, a sustainable design is also the one you want keep for years to come. It’s an axiom that Expormim takes to heart. For the Spanish furniture maker, a commitment to reduced environmental impact is paired with a rigorously evolving — yet enduringly elegant — commitment to luxurious Mediterranean style. Case in point? The newly expanded Obi collection and Plump family of seating.

Designed by Ludovica + Roberto Palomba, the Obi collection is inspired by the eponymous belt found on traditional Japanese kimonos. A plush yet deftly proportioned outdoor seating series, the collection expands with the addition of two new dining chairs; one with a four-leg design, and one with an exceptionally stable sled base. Like the whole of the collection, the new designs also showcase the collection’s updated Premium Belt, a wider hand-sewn textured band that subtly elevates each piece with an artisanal finish.

Expormim’s commitment to support hand-crafted textile traditions is paired with an emphasis on circular materials. Notably, the Obi collection‘s sturdy and resilient 100 per cent aluminum frame accommodates continuous recycling, allowing a closed material loop. Long before the aluminum is reused, however, the company’s “ecodesign” commitment thoughtfully helps extend the longevity — and style — of every piece. Comprising spare parts, care kits and protective covers, the program facilitates ease of repairability and maintenance to keep treasured furniture beautiful.

The same emphasis on durability, comfort, craft and sophisticated simplicity defines the whole of the Expormim portfolio. Yet, designing for the long term doesn’t come at the expense of carefully considered evolution. Just as the Obi collection has been thoughtfully expanded, the popular Plump sofa welcomes a quietly striking new 22.5º module.

The modular Plump family of sofa features a wide range of technical fabric options, making the design suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

The sculptural addition stretches the possibilities of the versatile modular family, opening up fresh compositional possibilities — including the option of combining two modules to form an assertive 45º angle. Elevated by striking piping and soft, cloud-like comfort, the Plump sofas are highly customizable with a wide range of technical fabrics, making them suitable for outdoor use. As in the Obi collection, a high resistance aluminum tube frame ensures longevity, while also facilitating efficient recycling, in line with circular design principles.

For Expormim, a third-generation family-owned company, a heritage of timeless Mediterranean design traditions is also the springboard for continuing evolution. In lieu of a philosophy built on chasing fleeting and disposable trends, an exceptional sense of luxury emerges from the hard-won pleasure of slow, lasting craft and traditional artisanal fabrication. And after all, the most sustainable thing to do with a piece of furniture is keep it for the artfully long haul.
