Make it unexpected. That was the brief presented to Belgian architect and TOIETMOI studio founder Thomas Evenepoel for a bathroom redesign in a heritage Luxembourg home. “We wanted to have an element that you wouldn’t expect to stumble upon — a real surprise in a house that’s over 100 years old,” the client explains. To help realize this unconventional request, Evenepoel tapped a long-time collaborator: Antwerp-based interiors company Fermetti and its design label Atelier Belge. Strongly inspired by 1970s futurism — the organic, dreamlike forms of Verner Panton’s Visiona installations and Luigi Colani’s high-gloss interiors — their all-pink bathroom acts as a retrofuturistic intervention in a century-old home.

Partially blocked by a translucent glass brick wall, the tiled shower nook feels light and airy — yet still connected to the rest of the room.

The scheme is divided by a unique material mix that evokes a modern take on the ’70s: A graphic mosaic tile treatment defines the shower stall, which is enclosed by a translucent glass-brick wall (an interior detail from the ’70s enjoying its own renaissance) and paired with a retro-inspired curved polyester tub in Le Corbusier pink. But it’s this expanse of pink polyester — which covers the floor, tub and sink — that steals the show. “The contrast between the mosaic section and the polyester part allows a balance between the classic tradition of the bathroom and its modern evolution,” says Evenepoel. Commonly used to waterproof pools and boat hulls, the smooth, continuous surface is highly wear-resistant and easy to clean. The team at Fermetti are experts in custom polyester bathrooms: “It offers both durability and design flexibility. And it’s a highly versatile material that allows us to create seamless, custom forms that feel modern and refined,” says Deevie Vermetten, the brand’s manager and designer.

With minimal clutter, the seamless pink polyester surface flows from counter to tub with ease, complete with cut-out compartments to the side of the vanity that create a handy place for toiletries.

The light pink hue — also a favourite choice of Fermetti’s — transforms what could have been a sterile space into a warm and playful yet refined interior. “We’re drawn to how the colour can subtly change the mood of the room without overwhelming the overall design,” explains Vermetten. A mirrored kickplate and metal plate–fronted cabinet doors on the sinuous vanity, in combination with a trio of frosted-glass orb sconces, infuse the room with visual lightness and dimension. And, much to the client’s delight, the pink bathroom is a dazzling surprise for any visitors looking to use the water closet.
