Cactus, Cubic Sky

During the day, the space is accented by ambient patterns and subtle moods. At night, it matches the DJ’s beat with a vivid display of electrifying patterns, fostering an immersive experience that makes concert- and party-goers feel like part of the music. Here, at Puerto Rico’s Fifty Eight venue, the Cubic Sky installation by technology and design agency Cactus marries an elegant design language with technological innovation to create a bespoke ambiance for each occasion.

Situated within San Juan’s popular La Concha Resort, Fighty Eight can accommodate over 300 guests, transitioning from a relaxed, informal daytime lounge space into one of the hotspots of Puerto Rico’s vibrant nightlife.

Transforming an underused lounge space, New York- and Brazil-based Cactus has brought new life to the venue with the introduction of a bespoke full-ceiling chandelier. Composed of hundreds of custom-made light boxes, Cubic Sky offers an impressively flexible lighting program that accentuates the mood of the venue while subtly drawing attention to its own pixelated aesthetic.

Each of the light boxes is individually programmable, allowing for a richly varied lighting program. Capable of expressing a wide range of hue and brightness, the light boxes can be used to introduce a sense of variety and gradient to the space, or to play up the drama with a bright, unified tone.

Through the daytime hours and into the early evening, Cubic Sky is programmed to reflect the Caribbean sky outside, with the soft whites of passing clouds quietly accenting a palette of calm blue tones.

As the sun lowers, meanwhile, the colours of each night’s sunset are automatically reflected graphically in the play of light and pattern indoors, underscoring a clear – and visually striking – link between the venue and its natural surroundings.

After sundown, the possibilities expand. As Fifty Eight transitions from lounge to nightclub, Cactus’s programming allows lighting patterns to respond to the rhythm of the music. DJ’s are also able to take full control of the installation, facilitating a rich array of custom experiences. For a space that transitions in use throughout the day, Cubic Sky offers an appropriately flexible – and fun – evolution of mood.
