In El Peral, a tiny town located in the Spanish province of Cuenca, home to just 660 inhabitants, vineyards and fields of grain stretch across the rolling rural landscape. Naturally, the local economy revolves primarily around farming. The nature of this work is inherently cyclical, swelling and receding in accordance with the harvest. For Agrosemillas, a seed producer and leader in sustainable farming technology, whose employees range from warehouse workers to engineers in research and innovation, those diverse workflows formed the basis of the brief for its new workspace, designed by Madrid’s Impepinable Studio and located on the outskirts of town.

The new offices were constructed alongside more than 4,500 square metres of new production and storage facilities, all of which will work together to facilitate the growth and evolution of the company, which is transitioning from its primary focus on seed production to agricultural tech and sustainability. The three buildings utilize the same construction systems, materials and trades, leveraging limited local resources, including craftspeople, formwork carpenters and industrial construction experts. These constraints heavily informed both the office’s technical considerations and its “deliberately austere architectural approach,” as described by the architects in the project press release.

To that end, the building is comprised of a concrete plinth, shared with the adjacent industrial warehouses, and topped by four repurposed shipping containers, all painted kelly green, one of the brand’s signature colours. Each container is open on two of its side, creating a sawtooth-like roof that brings ethereal northern daylight into the interior’s generous double-height spaces, ensuring plenty of natural light throughout the day. On the roof, there is space to grow experimental crops, helping to close the gap between research and production.

Inside, the containers’ vibrant colour and configuration is the defining architectural throughline of the 280-square-metre office. The company’s other brand colour, a pungent mustard yellow, shows up throughout the space: in the doorframes, in the playful porthole windows with their circular shutters, and in the USM Haller units that act as both storage and partitions within the open plan.

A range of different zones accommodates the shifting tasks and schedules of the company’s various employees throughout the year. The plan is organized in three bands, dedicated to open workspaces, service areas, and meeting rooms and laboratory facilities, each with separate entrances according to logistical workflows. Within the flexible space, millwork and material changes also provide a sense of order, helping to define areas for head-down work, collaborative meetings and technical research.

Though the office’s unexpected use of colour and form gives Agrosemillas a more youthful and informal identity, the workspace remains firmly grounded in the realities of agriculture. Behind its expressive character is a workplace shaped by changing routines, available skills and practical requirements — allowing it to serve as both a new face of the company and a rigorously functional workplace.
