The results are in! It is our immense pleasure to introduce and applaud the AZ Awards 2026 winners, all 28 of them from around the globe, whom we officially celebrated at the AZ Awards Gala tonight! Stellar architecture across Canada — including MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects’ Hilltop Cottage in New Brunswick, Daily tous les jours’ Human Perches in Quebec and Lebel & Bouliane’s Durham Spine & Pain Institute in Ontario — stood out alongside equally groundbreaking works in Japan, China, Denmark and the U.S. One firm, Copenhagen’s SLA, won for its lush landscape of Grønningen Bispeparken in Copenhagen as well as its concept for reimagining (together with Arcadis) Toronto’s David Crombie Park. And the Toronto-based firm MJMA took a prize for leading an experiential wayfinding project in New Zealand: the Hiwa Recreation Centre. Clearly, excellence knows no borders.
Collectively, the AZ Awards 2026 winners represent the state of architecture and design — and it’s encouraging and inspiring to honour these projects, products and concepts that exemplify not only aesthetic prowess but also a commitment to social and environmental responsibility. Two phenomenal buildings — Michael Maltzan Architects’ 26 Point 2 Apartments in Long Beach, California, and mcCallumSather and Smart Density’s 1120 Ossington in Toronto — were recognized for bringing joy and a strong sense of identity to multi-unit structures for people transitioning out of homelessness. And many were the awardees elevating mass timber, both by utilizing the construction in novel applications and by bringing out new expressions in wood buildings. These include Montgomery Sisam’s Koffler Scientific Reserve and Moriyama Teshima’s Limberlost Place (both in Ontario) and the Three Roofs Timber Hall in Nagano, Japan, by OOTT.
In addition to the winners chosen by our international jury, we also raise a glass to our People’s Choice honourees, selected by an online vote. In some cases, the people agreed with our official panel — in most others, as we are always delighted to see, their opinions and allegiances diverged dramatically. We are proud to present them all here, and also to celebrate them again in our Summer 2026 edition of Azure, out soon! In that issue, we also fête our Emerging awards winners, which have their own dedicated announcement.
