The Innovators Issue: Junya Ishigama's genre-busting architecture, Sidewalk Labs and the future of the city, and more!

It’s personal – and full of personality. For designers Egg Collective, the new Emmy collection draws inspiration from one of the design trio’s grandmothers. Marking Egg Collective’s latest creation for Design Within Reach (DWR), the sofa and sectional offers a comfortable and elegantly uncomplicated centrepiece for the modern living space.

For a design partnership that emerged from close student friendships at St. Louis’s Washington University, the Emmy collection is a fittingly intimate addition to Egg Collective’s increasingly acclaimed portfolio. The three designers – Hillary Petrie, Stephanie Beamer and Crystal Ellis – are becoming well-known for creating sculptural, heirloom furniture pieces that evoke their own personal histories, as well as memories of family and friends.

Named for Beamer’s grandmother Mary Elizabeth – affectionately known as Emmy – the simple but meticulously well-resolved sofa and sectional collection exemplifies Egg Collective’s deft understanding of craft and materiality. “We’re highly invested in the way things go together,” says Petrie. “Because of our architectural training, we understand how things are made. We excel at constantly figuring out these puzzles.”

The Emmy collection is characterized by a subtly curved frame, which fosters a cozy sense of enclosure. There’s an unpretentious grace to the design, which maintains a luxuriously streamlined aesthetic without sacrificing comfort.

Available in an impressive variety of colourways, Egg Collective’s latest sofa collection – exclusively created for Design Within Reach – is a versatile design that suits myriad contexts and styles. The simple and aesthetically balanced form also takes on a surprising sense of fluidity when Emmy’s subtle curves are seen from different angles. For a deftly pared down design, the couches and sectionals offer a surprising sense of energy and movement – all while fitting harmoniously into the living space.

“The Emmy Sofa speaks to multiple generations,” says Beamer. “Youthful yet mature like her namesake, it resonates with a sense of modernism and tradition. It’s a place to feel at home.” In other words, it’s signature Egg Collective.
