Introvert lounge chairs by Robbie Williams for Moooi

Pop stars are constantly one-upping themselves — stepping out in ever-more dazzling outfits, executing daring stage theatrics, and then embarking on an entirely new era and starting all over again. Yet watching Better Man, the 2024 biopic about Robbie Williams, the question arose: How on earth can the British singer possibly top this? In the film, directed by Michael Gracey, a CGI chimpanzee portrayed Williams over the course of his career to date, moving from boy band member to rehab and, finally, to taking the stage for a triumphant comeback at the Royal Albert Hall. It was some of the strangest cinema imaginable. So how, exactly, does Williams follow up that sort of monkey business? As it turns out, by entering the furniture business. This week, Moooi introduces the Introvert lounge chair, designed by none other than Robbie Williams.

But make no mistake — much like Better Man, Introvert is not just some irreverent gimmick. Indeed, what surprised so many people about Williams’s foray into moviemaking was the emotional punch that his film packed. It was contemplative, soulful and ultimately, moving. In that sense, the Introvert chair is a natural follow-up. Sure enough, Moooi (which is no stranger to blending whimsy with emotional weight) describes the design as “a bold, vulnerable exploration of inner life where anxiety, ego, humour and healing all co-exist in the same frame.” It is, in other words, a source of comfort for overwhelmed wallflowers.

Designing a chair (as well as a matching “security blanket” and cushions) for introverts might seem counterintuitive for a seasoned stage performer. Then again, it is important to balance arena tours with moments of quiet recovery. “In a world that rarely slows down, we often crave a place of respite, and this chair is just that,” says Williams. With a curved silhouette perfect for cocooning, the wood-framed seat is covered in a 3D-quilted fabric blending virgin wool, alpaca and cotton to create a pattern reminiscent of reptile skin — only soft. Moooi describes the effect as a reflection of “a mind shaped by frame and fractured by pressure.” Williams elaborates with his own poetic explanation of the chair’s thick skin: “The things that destroyed me also made me successful.”

Furniture design is just the latest chapter in the creative’s multi-hyphenate career — in addition to music and cinema, Williams has also been trying his hand at art. Sure enough, the Introvert chair debuted this spring in his third exhibition, Radical Honesty, where it served as a place to reflect on his series of line drawings filled with philosophical prompts. Moooi will also be holding a launch event for the design at the Standard Spa this December to coincide with Design Miami 2025.
