In the heart of Ontario’s wine region, Moncer’s showroom is appropriately located in a former winery. Before the flooring company nabbed it, the 139-square-metre space also previously served as the storage room for the antique shop next door.
Moncer called on Stewart, who cut his teeth at Cecconi Simone, to create a double-duty space. Catering primarily to professionals, Moncer needed a functional office and showroom in the event designers brought along their clients. Stewart salvaged the space’s best attribute – the high ceiling with exposed beams – and worked with a limited material palette of wood, stone and felt.
Large panels of the company’s offerings are mounted along walls not unlike art hanging in a gallery. But the showroom’s pièce de résistance is the seamless oak boardroom table, constructed on site from Admonter‘s panels with a built-in bench at one end. “We wanted to show the product doing a job, not just as a panel,” says Stewart. Other knockout features include the customized light fixures. “It was important not to compromise the ceiling height or overpower the embossed logo at the front,” says the designer. So he suspended a pendant above the boardroom table and three spear-like luminares above the reception desk.
Additional furnishings include a long upholstered bench punctuated with a C-shaped walnut side table, Eames plastic side chairs that serve as seating for the boardroom table and Kathryn Walter‘s fantastic felt stools.
While minimalistic in design, the showroom succeeds in providing a warm and intimate shopping experience.
Moncer is located at 2b-3836 Main St. in Jordan Village, Ontario.
