The Innovators Issue: Junya Ishigama's genre-busting architecture, Sidewalk Labs and the future of the city, and more!

When it comes to influencing the interior landscape of the office, Orgatec is unparalleled. This show, which takes place every two years in Cologne, is where the most innovative brands present not only new furniture systems but also future-forward concepts that examine how spaces can make workers happier, healthier and more productive. This year, the show presents a continuing trend toward flexible furnishings, eco-conscious finishes and private nooks for smaller collaborative groups.

Castelli shows off that last trend with the new Liquid Lounge, by Studio CIBIDI. The modular soft seating pieces can be combined with any number of accessories, and can be positioned in reception areas as well as in the office, where they can be used for smaller meetings. Brightening the office, Offecct‘s Sound Wave wall tiles not only soften the acoustics inside big, bustling offices, they also comes in planter versions, transforming the installation into a modular green wall. Lammhults presents the Quickly tables, with legs that can be easily folded, so that they stack up and store away, making impromptu general meetings much less cumbersome to plan.

These new products – among many more to be launched by such companies as Vitra, Buzzispace, Hay, Prooff and hundreds of other brands – show how a simple furnishing can help designers rethink how work spaces are used.

Orgatec takes place from October 23 to 27 in Cologne, Germany.
