David Chipperfield. John Pawson. Claesson Koivisto Rune. All household names in international architecture, the renowned trio help shape a polymathic sensibility that defines Wästberg’s 2022 lighting series. For the Swedish manufacturer, the new launches — which also includes pieces by leading product designer Dirk Winkel, as well as updated classics by Nendo and Inge Sempé — epitomize a fusion of architectural presence with refined, high-performance style. Below, we take a look at the six styles that comprise the new collection.

w223 Pawson

A pleasantly weighty, monolithic form defines British architect John Pawson‘s inaugural design for Wästberg. Offered in bold (and radically different) marble and aluminum finishes, the compact desk lamp features notched cut-outs that amplify the sculptural presence and create a unique side profile. The streamlined interplay of rectilinear and curved forms makes for a distinctive presence, while the interplay of light and material — particularly the translucent marble — transforms the lamp when the dimmable light is turned on. It’s a work of architecture at the scale of a home accessory.

w222 Focal

Aesthetic purity is David Chipperfield‘s signature — and the w222 focal light doesn’t disappoint. Streamlined yet expressive, the Berlin-based architect’s latest Wästberg collaboration is an understated standout. Fabricated from die-cast aluminum and finished with a smooth surface, the crisp, angular oval pendant is well-suited for both commercial and residential environments. Featuring a COB LED, the subtle pendant creates a rich, clearly defined light. The flexible w222 can be suspended or wall- or ceiling-mounted, making for a versatile yet eye-catching presence.

w221 Medium

The most playful entry in the 2022 collection, the Claesson Koivisto Rune-designed w221 Medium Pendant is the latest in a popular series. Complementing the w151 Extra large pendant and w201 Extra small pendant — both also designed by the Swedish architects — the conical pendant finds a happy middle ground. An assertively angular form makes every pendant a striking accent — or a centrepiece in its own right. Within each cone, an SML LED creates an even spread of dimmable, warm white light.

w224 Alto, w225 Ion and w227 Winkel alu

w224 Alto

Rooted in a bold, brutalism-inspired design language, this trio of compact Dirk Winkel designs packs a surprisingly effective — yet never overwhelming — LED punch. Along with the w224 Alto pendant, the w225 Ion desk lamp and w227 Winkel alu task light are versatile workspace solutions. A sleek black form is paired with a precision friction joint and a dimmable full-spectrum LED that recreates the full colour spectrum of sunlight — perfect for designer workspaces where exact colour perception is paramount.
