Steven Evans’ recent collection of large, black and white photographs is titled De Pedra [Of Stone]. It explores the remarkable landscape of northern and central Portugal, where vernacular and religious architecture, art, as well as roads and terraced farm fields are built from locally quarried stone. Crumbling huts, sturdy drystone walls, light-filled renaissance cloisters, intricately carved effigies and mysterious elevated granaries reveal an ancient and intimate connection between people and the land they inhabit.
Steven Evans is a Toronto-based photographer with 40 years of experience developing his craft. Both his fine art photography and his commercial work reveal a passion and deep understanding of the built and natural world, capturing a sense of place with compelling compositions and an ability to express the ephemeral qualities of light. His attention to detail and craftsmanship in the technical production of each image are hallmarks of his work, especially De Pedra [Of Stone].
He has worked with many of Canada’s top firms and his images have been published in national and international magazines and websites, and have been honoured with National Magazine Awards. His photography has been exhibited nationally and internationally and can be found in numerous public collections including The Canadian Centre for Architecture, The Art Gallery of Ontario and the City of Toronto Archives, as well as numerous private and corporate collections.
