The Pennsylvania State University is looking for an Architecture Department Head to join its team in Pennsylvania, USA.

Job description and position requirements:

  • The Architecture Department Head must be an adept and empathetic administrator with an active research or creative practice that contributes to the mission of the department and to the life of the Stuckeman School. The ideal candidate will provide evidence of their experience with, and interest in, contributing to the goals of the Department and University.
  • Responsibilities:
  • Day to day administration of a complex department. The department leadership team includes an associate department head of graduate programs, and an assistant department head of administration.
  • Recruit faculty to contribute to the department’s initiatives through tenure and non-tenure track roles. Manage the promotion and review process for faculty including annual assessments and post tenure reviews.
  • Maintain program accreditation and support and develop the curricular initiatives for professional education and design research; support and develop graduate education.
  • Support and promote faculty development, research, creative work and scholarship in a research-intensive university setting.
  • Provide fiscal management in a public institution setting; work collaboratively with the school’s financial officer.
  • Engage the school leadership team and support the development of school’s research centers and facilities; support the development of a multi-disciplinary school culture.
  • Engage with the office of Advancement to develop opportunities for student scholarships and research funding.
  • Maintain a research agenda or creative practice.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have teaching and/or administrative experience with both professional degree education, and research-based graduate programs. A successful record of administrative leadership and demonstrated experience in strategic planning, budget planning and management, and personnel management that includes the promotion and tenure process are required. The candidate must demonstrate experience and knowledge of issues relevant to higher education and collaborative multi-disciplinary experience. Evidence of equitable considerations, awareness, and practice with regard to twenty-first century curricula development, inclusive practices in developing diverse student bodies, staff, and faculty membership, along with evidence of working collectively to cultivate a culture that supports success and enables all members of a college community to thrive is required.

Candidates must hold a terminal degree in architecture or a related discipline. Candidates may hold several degrees, however at least one degree must be in architecture. The candidate must also demonstrate a record of scholarly/creative achievement and/or professional work that contributes to the mission of the department and the life of the school.
