Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) is hiring a Design Architect with 10+ years of experience. You’ll be based out of their office in Austin, USA. This is an opportunity to establish design direction and further the development of architectural projects through all phases. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) is looking for someone with a strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes, communicates, and maintains quality standards for design and work products across the internal and external team.
  • Oversees design research, programmatic analysis, and compliance with local codes, while guiding material and finish selection.
  • Leads and/or reviews design documentation (drawings, models, renderings, animations) to align with firm standards for presentations and publications.
  • Drafts design narratives to communicate intent to clients and collaborators, contribute to publications, and support technical specifications.
  • Communicates design goals regularly to the team and fosters strong relationships with clients, the design community, and government agencies.
  • Supports the Project Manager in setting budgets, schedules, and work plans; assists in construction phase services, including site visits, mockup reviews, and shop drawing coordination.
  • Attends and presents in client design meetings; facilitates internal team meetings with project leadership and ensures proper documentation.
  • Collaborates with Operations, Marketing, and Records Management to archive final project assets.
  • Actively participates in local and firm-wide Design Review Meetings to advance design initiatives.
    Manages studio staffing, providing timely feedback and professional development for supervised staff.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a professional degree in Architecture or a related field.  
  • Licensed in state of practice; LEED or other green building accreditation preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience or equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Strong understanding of sustainable strategies and principles including familiarity with LEED or other green building rating systems.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in Rhino, parametric and rendering software, Adobe Suite, and Google Workspace. Familiarity with Revit and AutoCAD.
