The AZURE Houses issue returns in 2026 with stunning, innovative residential projects from Canada and around the world. Plus, we take a look at that seeming relic of the past: the mall.

Remnant lounge chair

Contrasting but complementary, the Core and Remnant sofas and armchairs – by Note Design Studio for Sancal – represent how different construction techniques can be used to create opposite forms from the same silhouette. One plays with positive space, the other with negative.

With the classically designed Core, a voluminous silhouette is flattered by a generous seat and quilted backrest. Evoking the sense of having been chiselled from a single block of material, the sofa and armchair present a solid face – one that is at once elegant and inviting.

Remnant, on the other hand, looks like the sculptor’s mould discarded after making Core. Similar in profile but with a void where the base would be expected, the volume’s lightness does not express the technical developments and engineering required to create it. All-around detailed quilting highlights its shape.

Both the Core and Remnant series are available in a range of fabrics in both neutral and bold colourways.
