Designed by Alberto and Francesco Meda, the Eolie lighting collection from Foscarini pays homage to the “volcanic charisma” of the Aeolian Islands in Italy. The three compact suspension lamps in the collection – Alicudi, Filicudi and Panaera – are named after individual islands in the archipelago and are the result of experimentation with an unexpected material that is at once sustainable and highly expressive.
Made from scrap pieces of volcanic stone that have been transformed into a lightweight and malleable compound through the addition of resin, the Eolie lighting collection from Foscarini has a rugged yet elegant appearance, with each of the three lights exhibiting its own harmonious personality.
Alicudi, Filicudi and Paneara establish dialogues with the spaces they inhabit, instilling curiosity and warmth without overwhelming. The suspension lamps are fit with an LED spot that casts a precise downward glow; the pendants are ideal for use over tables, counters and islands in both residential and commercial environments.
The three styles in the Eolie collection from Foscarini can be used alone or in groupings to create subdued focal points or more impactful clusters; suitable for both residential and commercial environments, the lights can be installed at the same height for a minimal effect or at differing heights to create luminous cascades of staggered lighting.
Each light is crafted using a semi-artisanal approach – manufactured moulds set the shapes, which are then hand-finished. The salvaged materials feature a multitude of grain sizes, which, when poured at certain angles generate craters and unique porous textures. The black cable and ceiling plate complement the natural hue of the recycled lava stone.
