Recognizing that a single object can be perceived differently during the day than at night, Belgian designer Alain Gilles developed his Half & Half suspension lamp as two separate but unified parts, giving each its own moment to come alive. 

An oval sphere split across its middle, Half & Half’s upper portion is made from ceramic hand-sculpted into a three-dimensional cross shape reminiscent of brutalist architecture. Throughout the day, its high-gloss finish reflects natural light, creating an opportunity for shadows to play across the surface as the sun shifts and eventually sets.

Then, when it’s time to turn the light on, the bottom half takes centre stage — the pleasing shape of the mouth-blown opal glass half-bulb is enhanced by the warm ambient glow it emits. The two contrasting materials share an appealing simplicity that contributes to the overall effect and purpose.  

The lamp can be hung individually to make a subdued yet beautiful statement or in multiples arranged at different heights in a cloud as a modern chandelier. The Half & Half Suspension Lamp is available in two sizes and four colourways — Caviar, Green, Smooth (white) and Toscan.
