New York-based lighting brand Studio Luddite has introduced the Pell chandelier, an adaptation of its Pell pendant light that exemplifies the brand’s dedication to craftsmanship and material exploration. 

Similar to its predecessor, the Pell chandelier – created by studio founder and principal designer Lex Zee – is striking in its linearity and leather composition. With the Pell chandelier, up to 10 cylindrical stems suspend an equal number of frosted-glass globes in an asymmetrical formation from a geometric metal frame. 

Each stem of the Pell chandelier from Studio Luddite is made from a slender metal pole that is concealed by a series of stacked leather discs – an unconventional variant to wrapped leather. The stacked arrangement puts the focus on the edges of the leather discs rather than their surfaces, which creates a “compelling textural rhythm through the exposed cross-sections of natural hide.” 

The leather discs of the Pell chandelier from Studio Luddite are left untreated rather than finished with traditional techniques, an intentional decision that celebrates the characteristics and charming imperfections inherent to the natural material. 

Striking a delicate balance between order and asymmetry, the Pell chandelier is suspended from a horizontal framework that sets a solid geometric foundation. The individual leather-stacked stems are installed at varying lengths to create a dynamic visual rhythm that the brand describes as “capturing musical notes suspended in space.” Enhancing the dramatic visual effect are the warm-toned leather elements and frosted-glass orbs, which emit a soft, ambient glow. 

The genuine leather hide portions of the Pell chandelier from Studio Luddite are available in three options – Natural Leather, Brown Leather and Black Leather – and the metal components come in Aged Brass, Blackened brass and Aged Silver finishes. The lighting fixture can be fully customized for the number of stem drops, height and structural orientation.
