New York-based artist Fernando Mastrangelo has designed the Petra planters for Indigenus, a series of sculptural vessels that bring a fresh perspective to the South African design studio.
The Petra planters from Indigenus merge two signatures of Mastrangelo’s artistic work – a cylindrical-shaped drum and “petra,” an organically shaped rock-like formation, both of which are found in many of his compelling furniture and art pieces.
This combination of geometric precision with natural and rugged textures emphasizes the beauty and unique look of the Petra planters from Indigenus. The series is also one of the most complex designs the brand has developed.
Sculpted from a specialized mix of cement and stone, the Petra planters have an intricate and tactile surface; hand-sculpted models are translated into the finished product using specific moulds that allow the peculiarities of the material to shine. The smooth cylinder seems to erupt through a surrounding mass of irregular rock formations, creating a visual and tactile tension that invites exploration.
The Petra planters from Indigenus are offered in eight colourways – Nutmeg, Mushroom, Black, Brown, White, Sandstone, Grey and Terracotta – and three sizes – small, medium and tall – and are suitable for use indoors and outdoors.
A durable plastic liner is included with the Petra planters, which provides structural integrity, water efficiency and longevity; the liners feature an integrated self-watering reservoir, fill receptacle and a water-level gauge and fit snug within the planter to facilitate draining.
