For the Treillage tile collection for Ann Sacks, designer Kelly Wearstler looked to the “quiet romance” of landscape architecture for inspiration, recognizing that the built form often serves as a framework for nature.
Throughout history, elements like the geometric parterres of Renaissance and French formal gardens and the latticed trellises and conservatories of the 19th-century were employed as more than ornamentation. They also served as living structures that reconcile architecture and landscape.
The Treillage collection from Ann Sacks is Wearstler’s ninth for the tile brand and her sixth for its sister brand, MADE by Ann Sacks. With it, she translates these centuries-old architectural systems into a series of contemporary tiles.
Distilling the garden’s inherent architectural logic, repetition, geometry and growth resulted in a portfolio that blurs the formal and traditional boundaries between inside and outside.
The Treillage collection from Ann Sacks is produced by MADE artisans using techniques that have been refined over four decades. The fired clay tile collection features five 15.2-by-15.2-centimetre formats — Cross, Diagonal Left, Diagonal Right, Grid and Weave. Each has its own distinct pattern and can be used independently to create a clear architectural rhythm or combined and layered together for more intricate and detailed compositions.
Combining raised and recessed surfaces, the tiles in the Treillage collection play with light, catching and reflecting it throughout the day. This sense of movement is enhanced by the hand-applied glazes; the crafted nature of the glazing ensures that no two tiles feel exactly the same but have subtle nuances.
The Treillage collection is available in all of the MADE by Ann Sacks Earthenware and Stoneware glazes, which include a combined total of nearly 100 tonal options. The tiles are suitable for a variety of interior vertical applications, including statement walls, backsplashes and shower walls. Depending on the climate and application method, the tiles may also be specified for use in outdoor settings.
