Fran Edgerley is a founding partner of Assemble, which has developed a form of practice that balances the conflicting pressures of financial sustainability and collectivity. The London studio – the first architecture firm to have ever won the Turner Prize – has been lauded as a radical form of practice; non-hierarchical and socially oriented, it heralded a new era of architectural work following the financial crash in 2008. This lecture reflects on how mythology becomes structural tokenism through a detailed look at the iterative internal structures of Assemble’s working practice and the subsequent forms of architecture it has produced.
