Life After Property is a lecture by Neeraj Bhatia as part of the University of Waterloo‘s series of lectures, “Arriscraft Canada Brick Speaker Series: From the Field”. Neeraj Bhatia is an architect, urban designer, and educator whose work resides at the intersection of politics, infrastructure, and urbanism. He is known for his project, Life After Property which examines lines drawn on land to claim ownership and demarcate property have had widespread ramifications on forming divisions—between race, class, ecologies, and social groups, amongst others and how the territory, neighbourhood, block, and home can be reclaimed for more collectivized ways of living and being.

Neeraj is also the founder of the design practice THE OPEN WORKSHOP as well as an Associate Professor at the California College of the Arts where he also directs Urban Works Agency, an urbanism research lab. Select honours include the Architectural League Young Architects Prize, Emerging Leaders Award from Design Intelligence, and the Canadian Prix de Rome.

THE OPEN WORKSHOP’s design-research has been commissioned by the Seoul Biennale, Venice Biennale, Chicago Architecture Biennial, and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, among other venues. Neeraj is author of the book, New Investigations in Collective Form, and co-editor of Bracket [Takes Action], Bracket [On Sharing], and the Petropolis of Tomorrow.
